Katrina

Devastated by her wrath
Katrina left atrocities in her aftermath
The young dehydrated dying of thirst
People weary
Cried in outbursts
Those before us who paved the way
Left forgotten and without a grave

Don’t give up!
Please Don’t!
Don’t ever lose hope!
I’m so sorry it took so long
I can't fathom why
Outraged and baffled I cried

We must cradle the weak
We have to turn the other cheek
We are here now
Lift you up
On your feet

Don’t let that anger turn to defeat
Gently handle those tears
Don’t let them lead to despair
We are Americans
Damn it!
You have to know
We care

Family, neighbors, and friends
In chaos they were tossed
No way of knowing
If loved ones are forever lost
Staggering dread
What must be going on
 In all of your heads

Black and white
No matter the color of your skin
Gay or straight
Differences big or small
Louisiana and Mississippi
I promise you
You will again stand tall!

I know you felt abandon
I hug you with all my heart
I don’t have much money
I live miles apart
I write this poem
I know it’s not much
This is my gift
I hope you feel touched
Even if for a minute
It lifts you up
Then I know the survivor in you
Must be tough
For all you’ve been through
You still find hope
You'll overcome
As you begin to cope

Don’t give up!
Please Don’t!
Don’t ever lose hope!
I’m so sorry it took so long
I can't fathom why
Outraged and baffled I cried

We must cradle the weak
We have to turn the other cheek
We are here now
Lift you up
On your feet

Don’t let that anger turn to defeat
Gently handle those tears
Don’t let them lead to despair
We are Americans
Damn it!
You have to know
We care
